What is Software?

Software is a general term for the various kinds of programs used to operate computers and related devices. (The term hardware describes the physical aspects of computers and related devices.) (Rouse, n.d)

The emerging trends in hardware and software development has revolutionized teaching and learning. Six noteable developments are:

  • Wireless Connectivity - Wireless connections have simplified computer networks by reducing the number 0of required cables and allowing greater freedom of movement. With the introduction of hotspots in chools each student can if chose to access information via the internet.

  • Development in portable devices - laptops, handheld computers and tablets have all improved teaching and learning.

  • Merging of technologies - communication capabilities are now housed in one device. For eg. cellular phones are not only used for voice communications but for even storage.

  • Availability of high-speed communications

  • Visual Immersion Systems 

  • Intelligent Applications - software that emulates human thought process and response to situations have created an interactive mode of delivering and receiving educational content.
